About Seoul
Seoul is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Korea. With a population over 10 million people it is by far the world’s most densely populated city among OECD nations and its metropolitan population is the second largest in the world after Tokyo. Seoul is the home of almost half of South Korea’s population and has therefore naturally become the country’s economic, political and cultural center.

Seoul is located in the western region of the Korean peninsula on the might Han River than runs through the center of Seoul. Seoul became a capital city in 18 BC when one of the three kingdoms at the time, Baekje established Seoul as the centre of its rich and brilliant culture.

Seoul is today home to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Changdeokgung, Hwaseong Fortress, Jongmyo Shrine and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. They are symbols of Seoul’s millennium long history as the center of Korean history.

Seoul’s worldwide known rapid economic development has made it a Global City and Alpha World City, raking 9th in 2008 Global Cities Index, as well as the world’s sixth most economically powerful city by Forbes.

Seoul is home to South Korean multinational companies like Samsung, Hyundai, LG and SK Telecom. Seoul is considered to be the most wired city in the world with the world’s highest broadband penetration. Seoul has been designated as the 2012 World Design Capital.
